Wireless - Manual Configuration For Windows 7

This article explains how to manually set up your Windows 7 computer to use the uchicago-secure wireless network.

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel.
  2. Click Network and Internet.
  3. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click Set up a new connection or network.

  5. Select Manually connect to a wireless network, then click the Next button.

  6. Enter or select the following, then click the Next button.
    • Network name: uchicago-secure or eduroam
    • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption type: AES

  7. Click Next
  8. Click Change connection settings.

  9. Click the Security tab.
  10. Select Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) for the Network Authentication Method.
  11. Deselect Remember my credentials.
  12. Click the Settings button.

  13. In the "Protected EAP Properties" window:
    • Select Validate Server Certificate
    • Deselect Connect to these Servers
    • Under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities", select the AddTrust External CA Root checkbox. No other boxes should be selected under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities."
    • Select Authentication Method: Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)

  14. Click OK.
  15. Click the Configure button.
  16. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows Logon name and password (and domain if any), then click the OK button.

  17. Click the OK button on all open "Wireless Network Properties" windows.
  18. A notice requesting additional logon information will appear in your system tray. Click Enter/select additional log on information.

  19. Enter your CNet credentials:
    • Type your CNetID into the User name field. For eduroam you will need to enter CNetID.uchicago.edu
    • Type your CNet password into the Password field.
    • Leave the Logon domain field blank.
    • Click the OK button.

  20. You need to verify that the certificate is valid before you continue. Click the View Server Certificatebutton to show the details of the certificate.
  21. If the Issued by: and Valid from match the information below, click OK.
    Note: Issued by may contain syntax "AddTrust External CA Root" or "InCommon Server CA."Issued to may contain syntax "network-auth00" or "network-auth01".
  22. Click the OK button.
  23. If the set up is successful, a window similar to the following will appear.
